Volunteering in Jamaica Bay

Join the Student Conservation Association to commemorate Veterans Day with service at Jacob Riis Park in Queens. SCA will work with Gateway National Recreation Area to build new garden beds and plant native pollinator species along the coastline of Jamaica Bay.


With the support of American Express and in support of the Find Your Park campaign, SCA is mobilizing volunteers coast to coast in celebration of the National Park Service Centennial. Join us on Jamaica Bay as we unite in service to our public lands. 

Free lunch and t-shirts will be provided for all volunteers!

 
WHEN: Saturday, November 12th, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  


WHERE: Jacob Riis Park, Rockaway Beach Blvd, Queens, NY 11694. Kickoff on the Jacob Riis Park Promenade (near the Riis Park Beach Bazaar). 

***Free volunteer shuttles will depart from Brooklyn College / Flatbush Avenue and return following the event. See details below.***


WHAT: Volunteers will help to build new garden beds and plant native pollinator species along the coastline of Jamaica Bay. 


BRING WITH YOU: Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and bring a reusable water bottle. The event will take place rain or shine so please dress for the weather! 


PROVIDED: SCA will provide light morning snacks and a free lunch for all volunteers, as well as work gloves and free Find Your Park t-shirts.

BY FREE VOLUNTEER SHUTTLE:

SCA will run free volunteer shuttles from Brooklyn College / Flatbush Ave to Jacob Riis Park. Volunteers taking the shuttle should plan to arrive at the Brooklyn College / Flatbush Avenue stop on the 2/5 train by 8:30 am. Shuttles will return to Brooklyn College following the event.

BY PUBLIC TRANSIT:

Take the 2/5 train to Brooklyn College / Flatbush Ave to transfer to the free volunteer shuttle. Or, take the Q35 bus to Marine Parkway / Rockaway Point BI VI, then walk 7 mins south to the beach promenade.

BY CAR:

Take the Belt Parkway / Shore Parkway to Exit 11S for Flatbush Ave. Head south on Flatbush Ave and cross Marine Parkway Bridge to come to the park. Free parking is available on site.
